The White Conch Shell is one of the Ashtamangala, the eight auspicious symbols of Buddhism, and it represents the Buddha's proclamation of the Dharma — the teaching given voice and sent out into the world. When a conch is blown, its deep, resonant sound spirals outward from the shell and travels far in every direction; and so the conch became the perfect emblem of the teaching that spreads outward like sound, reaching beings in all directions without distinction.
This is the heart of its meaning: the Dharma, like the conch's call, goes out to all. The sound of the conch does not choose its hearers or stop at any boundary; it fills the air and reaches everyone within range, the high and the low, the near and the far, all without favor. So too the Buddha's teaching is proclaimed for all beings alike, spiraling outward to reach whoever can hear it, carrying the call to awakening across every distinction of rank, place, or kind. The conch is the voice of the Dharma broadcast to the world — the awakening-sound sent out in all directions, the proclamation of the truth that reaches every being within earshot, calling all alike to wake. In Tibetan Buddhist ritual, the conch is blown to call practitioners to assembly, to announce significant ritual moments, and to dispel negative forces. Its sound is described in commentarial literature as traveling in all four directions simultaneously — north, south, east, west — and into the sky and into the earth, meaning the teaching it announces is omni-directional and cannot be contained or targeted. The conch shell in the Ashtamangala represents specifically the fearlessness of the dharma proclamation: it sounds whether or not everyone is ready to hear.
