Ascending through the seven heavens, the Prophet met the prophets who had come before, beheld the structure of the heavens, approached the divine presence, and received the institution of the daily prayers — the journey establishing the requirements of prayer and unveiling the architecture of the spiritual cosmos. And all of this — the journey to Jerusalem and the ascent through all the heavens — took place in a single night. On the night of the Isra and Mi'raj, Buraq carried Muhammad from the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca to the Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem, and then through each of the seven heavens, where Muhammad met the previous prophets, witnessed the structure of paradise and hell, and received from God the requirement of the five daily prayers. In tattoo symbolism, Buraq represents the sacred journey that reveals the entire architecture of existence — the transit through all levels of reality that changes the traveler's understanding of what they are traveling within.
