The Greeks looked at the patterns of stars and saw their myths made permanent and eternal. The great hunter Orion strides across the winter sky with his belt of three stars; the boastful queen Cassiopeia sits on her throne; Ursa Major, the Great Bear, was the nymph Callisto transformed; and dozens more constellations each carry a story of gods, heroes, and transformations.
Many of the constellation names and figures we still use today come from this Greek tradition (itself partly inherited from earlier peoples), so that the night sky became a vast picture-book of mythology, each pattern a tale raised beyond the reach of death and fixed forever in light. To learn the constellations was to learn the myths.
