In one of the Buddha's past-life tales, he was a golden deer-king. When a pregnant doe was chosen to be slaughtered for the human king's table, the deer-king offered his own life in her place. The human king, astonished that a beast would sacrifice itself for another, was so moved that he spared all the deer and renounced hunting altogether. The Buddhist deer is gentleness and compassion as power — the peaceful creature present at the birth of the teaching, and the selfless one whose willingness to die for another turned a king from killing.
The deer is one of the most symbolically rich animals across world cultures. In Celtic mythology, white deer were messengers from the Otherworld.
