Double Happiness (囍, shuāngxǐ) is the Chinese character for joy, xǐ (喜), written twice and joined into a single symmetrical glyph. A beloved folk tale explains the origin of Double Happiness. A young scholar, traveling to the capital to sit the imperial examinations, fell ill in a village and was cared for back to health. There he met and fell in love with a beautiful young woman, the daughter of the household, who set him half of a couplet as a riddle and promised her answer when he returned. He went on to the examinations, placed at the very top, and was summoned before the emperor, who tested him with a line of verse — which the scholar realized was the perfect match to the half-couplet the young woman had given him. He completed both.
Returning, he answered her riddle, won her hand, and on the same stretch of days received word of his triumph in the examinations and celebrated his wedding. Overwhelmed by two great joys arriving together — success and love — he took up his brush and wrote the character for happiness twice, side by side, joining them into one. Thus was born 囍, Double Happiness: the joy of fortune and the joy of love, doubled and made one. The Chinese Double Happiness is the emblem of joy redoubled — born of the day two great happinesses met.
