Eros Tattoo Meaning

Attraction, desire, and the primordial force without which nothing comes together.

Eros is the Greek god and primordial force of love, attraction, and desire — at once one of the first powers to exist, the cosmic principle that draws all things together, and the winged archer whose arrows kindle love, the very force without which nothing in the universe or the heart would come together. To carry Eros is to carry attraction, desire, and the force that binds all things — the primordial power of coming-together without which there is only scattered chaos, the winged archer of love, the daemon that connects what would otherwise remain forever apart.

In Hesiod's Theogony (c. 700 BCE), the great account of the origin of the gods and the cosmos, Eros is named among the very first things to exist — one of the first four primordial powers, coming into being after Chaos, Gaea (the Earth), and Tartarus (the abyss). Here Eros is not yet the playful boy-god of later art but a vast cosmic force: the principle of attraction, of coming-together, the power that draws things toward one another and binds them.

Eros is, in this primordial sense, the reason the universe has structure rather than drift — the attractive force by which scattered elements bond, by which earth and sky and all things are drawn together to generate and create, by which atoms join and beings are drawn into union and love. Without Eros, there would be no cosmos at all, only scattered, isolated elements drifting apart; it is Eros, the force of attraction and union, that allows things to come together and a structured world to exist. Eros is the primordial power of attraction at the very foundation of the cosmos. The primordial Greek Eros is the force of coming-together — named in Hesiod's Theogony among the first four things to exist (after Chaos, Gaea, and Tartarus), not yet the boy-god but a vast cosmic force, the principle of attraction and union by which scattered elements bond and the universe has structure rather than drift, the power without which there is no cosmos at all, only isolated elements drifting apart.

The split between Hesiod's primordial Eros (the cosmic force of attraction) and the later Hellenistic Eros (Cupid, the mischievous child with a bow) represents one of the most significant theological reductions in Greek religion — the power that preceded the gods became a winged child. The Roman Cupid (from Latin cupere, 'to desire') is the Latin equivalent, further domesticated into the cherubic figure of Valentine's Day iconography. The Psyche and Eros myth (Apuleius, The Golden Ass, c. 160 CE) — in which the mortal Psyche loves the god Eros without knowing his identity, loses him through doubt, performs impossible tasks to win him back, and achieves immortality — is the oldest surviving complete fairy tale and the template for Beauty and the Beast and related story types. In Plato's Symposium (c. 385 BCE), Aristophanes's speech about the original spherical humans (who were split by Zeus for their arrogance) is one of the most recognizable philosophical myths in Western tradition — the idea that love is the search for one's other half.
