Garuda is a being of immense power: his speed is the speed of the wind itself, and his wings are so vast that when he spreads them in flight they are said to block out the sun and darken the sky. Born the son of the sage Kashyapa and Vinata, Garuda came into the world radiant and mighty, so brilliant that the gods at first mistook him for the god of fire.
Garuda's great myth is the theft of the amrita, the nectar of immortality: to free his mother Vinata from enslavement to the serpent nagas, Garuda flew to the heavens, overcame the gods and their defenses, and seized the amrita — and from this came his eternal enmity with the serpents and his service to Vishnu, who granted him immortality and made him his mount. As the eagle-king, Garuda embodies tremendous power, speed, devotion, and the soaring might that serves the divine. Garuda is the great eagle who bears Vishnu and rules the birds.
