Hanuman is the monkey god, the son of the wind god Vayu, possessed of immense, superhuman strength, the ability to fly and change his size, and a central, heroic role in the great epic the Ramayana. When the demon king Ravana abducted Rama's wife Sita and carried her to the island fortress of Lanka, it was Hanuman who, leaping across the ocean in a single mighty bound, found her, brought Rama word of her, and (after being captured and having his tail set alight) burned Lanka in defiance. In the great war that followed, Hanuman was Rama's most valiant warrior.

In one of his most famous feats, when Rama's brother lay dying and only a particular healing herb from a distant mountain could save him, Hanuman flew to the mountain — and, unable to identify the single herb, simply lifted the entire mountain and carried it back. Hanuman's strength is legendary, but it is always strength placed entirely in the service of Rama and the good. He is among the most beloved and worshipped deities in Hinduism.
