Ladybug Tattoo Meaning

Luck, fortune, protection, and a small, gentle blessing.

The ladybug is named for the Virgin Mary.

In medieval Europe, crops were being destroyed by aphids and the farmers prayed to the Virgin for help. Red beetles with black spots appeared and ate the aphids. The farmers called them Beetles of Our Lady — in German, Marienkäfer; in French, bête à bon Dieu, the Good God's creature; in English, Our Lady's bird, which became ladybird, which became ladybug.

The seven spots on the most common species were associated with the seven sorrows of Mary. The red was the color of her cloak. The ladybug was a miracle that could be held in the palm of your hand.

In cultures across the world, independently, the ladybug became a luck-bringer — specifically, the luck of things arriving at the right moment. In several European traditions, the direction the ladybug flies when it leaves your hand indicates the direction from which your luck will come. In Turkish tradition, the ladybug is called uğur böceği — luck insect. In Russian, bozhya korovka — God's little cow.

The ladybug is the creature that appeared when the crops were dying and ate the thing that was killing them, and looked beautiful while doing it, and left without being asked. The luck it carries is not random fortune. It is the specific luck of the right help arriving at the right moment in a form small enough to hold.
