Maitreya Tattoo Meaning
Hope, patience, and the future Buddha waiting for the world to be ready.
Maitreya is the future Buddha — the being who will be the next fully enlightened teacher of this world, now waiting in the Tushita heaven for the right time to come, the embodiment of hope and patience and the promise that awakening will always, eventually, be offered to the world again. To carry Maitreya is to carry hope, patience, and the future Buddha waiting for the world to be ready — the coming teacher whose arrival is both certain and not yet, the active, present readiness of one who waits with everything prepared.
Maitreya is the future Buddha — the being who will become the next fully enlightened teacher to appear in this world, the successor to the historical Buddha, Shakyamuni. He is not yet active among us; he is said to reside now in the Tushita heaven, the realm where a buddha-to-be awaits the proper time, biding there until the conditions in the world are right for his coming. In the distant future, when the teachings of the present Buddha have been forgotten and the world is again in need, Maitreya will descend, be born, attain enlightenment, and turn the wheel of the Dharma anew, teaching the path afresh to a world that has lost it.
Maitreya embodies a profound promise: that enlightenment will always be available, that the possibility of awakening never disappears from the world forever. Even when a buddha's teaching fades and is lost, even in the long darkness between the dispensations, the next Buddha is already prepared, waiting in Tushita for his hour. The path is never permanently closed; the light will come again. Maitreya is the guarantee of this — the assurance that the door to liberation, however it may seem to close in dark ages, will be opened once more, that there will always be another Buddha, another teaching, another chance for all beings to be freed. He is hope given a name and a face: the awakening that is certain to come again. The Buddhist Maitreya is the future Buddha awaiting his time in Tushita heaven — the promise that enlightenment will always come again. The Buddhist Maitreya is the Buddha who is yet to come — the future Buddha, the being who will be the next fully enlightened teacher in this world, currently residing in Tushita heaven awaiting the right conditions; the embodiment of the promise that enlightenment will always be available — even when a buddha's teaching fades, the next Buddha is already prepared, the path never permanently closed, the assurance that there will always be another Buddha and another chance for all beings to be freed.
Maitreya (from Sanskrit maitri, loving-kindness) is the only bodhisattva recognized across virtually all Buddhist traditions — Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana alike — as the coming Buddha. He is depicted seated in the Western manner (feet on the floor, not in lotus position), a posture that signals he is ready to stand and descend to earth. He wears a small stupa in his crown containing a relic of Shakyamuni Buddha. His hands are often in the dharmachakra mudra — already teaching before he has arrived. The period until Maitreya's coming is described in various texts as occurring after the current dharma has been entirely forgotten, in a future world-age; estimates range from 30,000 to 5.6 billion years. Multiple figures in history have claimed to be Maitreya's earthly manifestation, from the Chinese monk Budai (the 'laughing Buddha') to various 19th and 20th century religious leaders.
