Mudskippers (subfamily Oxudercinae, approximately 30 species) are air-breathing fish that spend most of their time on land. They breathe through their moist skin and through a modified gill chamber they keep moist, can survive out of water for days, climb mangrove roots with their pectoral fins, and build burrows in mud that they fill with air for their eggs — carrying mouthfuls of air underground to maintain the oxygen level. Males perform elaborate courtship displays on land — jumping, displaying fins — that are impossible underwater. During these displays they can jump 20 times their body length. They are not ancient — they are a modern fish that evolved land adaptations independently from the 375-million-year-old transition that produced all terrestrial vertebrates. They are, in a sense, the fish doing the same experiment now.
