Om Symbol Tattoo Meaning

The sacred sound, creation, oneness, and the source of all.

Om (Aum) is the sacred sound at the root of existence — held in the Dharmic traditions to be the primordial vibration from which the whole universe arose and of which it is still made, the sound of ultimate reality itself. To chant it is to sound the foundation of all things. To carry Om is to carry the sacred sound, oneness, and the source of all — the primordial vibration underlying creation, the syllable that contains the universe, the sound of the absolute from which everything comes and to which everything returns.

In Hinduism, Om is the most sacred of all sounds and symbols — the primordial sound from which the entire universe emanated, and the very sound-form of Brahman, the ultimate, absolute reality that underlies and pervades all existence. The ancient Upanishads declare Om to be the essence of everything, the syllable that is the whole world: past, present, and future, and that which lies beyond time. It is the seed-sound of creation, the vibration from which all other sounds and all of reality unfold.

Om is chanted at the beginning and end of prayers, recitations, and meditations, and is held to be the most powerful of all mantras, the sound that connects the one who utters it to the divine source of all. To intone Om is to align oneself with the fundamental vibration of the cosmos and with Brahman itself. It is sound as the substance and origin of reality. The Hindu Om is the sound of Brahman — the primordial vibration from which the universe arose and the sound-form of ultimate reality itself, the most sacred syllable that contains all that was, is, and will be.

Om (Aum) represents the three states of consciousness — waking (A), dreaming (U), and deep sleep (M) — plus the silence that follows, representing pure consciousness. It appears at the beginning and end of Hindu prayers, Buddhist mantras, and Jain scriptures. The visual symbol itself maps the journey of consciousness. In tattoo symbolism, Om represents the connection to the source — the vibrational essence that underlies all existence.
