Algiz Rune Tattoo Meaning

ᛉ — the rune of protection, defense, and the reach toward the divine.

Algiz (ᛉ) is the rune of protection — its upward-branching form like antlers, raised arms, or the splayed leaves of the sedge grass that cuts the hand that grasps it carelessly. It is the great defensive rune of the Elder Futhark, the shield and the warding sign, and also the reach upward: the connection between the human and the divine, the aspiration of the self toward something higher. To carry Algiz is to carry protection and aspiration — the warding shield and the reach toward the sacred.

Algiz is the protection rune of the Elder Futhark, the runic alphabet of the Germanic and Norse peoples. Its name is linked to the elk and to the sedge — a marsh grass with edges sharp enough to wound the careless hand, a natural defense. Its upward, branching shape was read as antlers lowered to defend, as a hand raised to ward off harm, and as a person standing with arms lifted toward the heavens. In runelore Algiz is the sign of defense, safety, and protection from enemies and danger — the rune one would call upon for a shield.

But Algiz reaches as well as guards. The same upraised form that wards off harm also reaches upward — toward the gods, toward the higher self, toward the divine — making Algiz also the rune of spiritual connection and aspiration, the link between the earthly and the sacred. The Norse Algiz is thus the warding sign and the reaching sign at once: protection from below, connection from above.

Algiz is the most commonly tattooed rune, chosen for its strong meaning of protection and its clean, striking branching form. As a sacred Norse symbol it is worn with respect for its tradition (and an awareness that runes have at times been misappropriated — Algiz itself is a benign protective sign). In tattoo symbolism it speaks to safety, defense, spiritual protection, and the reach toward the sacred.
