Michael holds many exalted roles: he is the guardian and protector of the Church and of God's people; he is the weigher of souls, who at the Last Judgment holds the scales on which souls are weighed; and he is invoked as the protector against evil and the defender of the faithful, especially at the hour of death. His very name is a battle-cry and a question that no one can answer above God: 'Mi-ka-El' — 'Who is like God?' His name in Hebrew — Mi-cha-El — is a rhetorical question: Who is like God? It is a statement that the answer is 'no one,' that there is nothing in creation comparable to the divine. Mont Saint-Michel off the coast of Normandy was built after Michael appeared to the Bishop of Avranches in 708 CE and commanded a church to be built on the tidal island. San Miguel missions across the American Southwest carry his name. He is the patron of soldiers, police officers, paramedics, and the dying — those whose work requires them to stand between the living and what threatens them.
