To carry the Shiva lingam is to carry creation, the infinite, and the formless — the sacred pillar that holds and represents the boundless, the axis around which existence turns, the formless absolute taking the most minimal of forms to be present and worshipped in the world.

In Hinduism the lingam is the most sacred and central representation of Shiva — but it is profoundly misunderstood when taken as merely a literal phallus. In its deepest meaning the lingam is the symbol of the formless absolute: the axis mundi, the cosmic pillar, the infinite and boundless reality of Shiva taking a minimal symbolic form so as to be present and worshipped in the world. The great myth of the Lingodbhava expresses this: when the gods Brahma and Vishnu argued over who was supreme, Shiva appeared before them as an infinite pillar of fiery light, stretching beyond sight in both directions. Brahma flew upward as a swan to find its top, and Vishnu dove downward as a boar to find its base — but neither, in all their searching, could find the end of it, for it was infinite. Humbled, they recognized Shiva as the boundless absolute. The lingam is this infinite pillar of light — the formless, limitless reality of the divine. It is the formless absolute (nirguna Brahman) taking the most minimal possible representational form — a column, an axis, the point around which everything turns. In tattoo symbolism, the Shiva lingam represents the formless at the center of all form — the still point around which the dance of existence moves.
