Ferryman Tattoo Meaning
Passage, transition, death, and carrying souls across the boundary.
Charon, the ferryman of Hades, carried souls across the rivers Styx and Acheron into the underworld. Greeks placed coins on the eyes or tongue of the dead to pay his fare - those without payment wandered the shores for a hundred years. His ferry was a one-way vessel; living heroes who descended to the underworld had to find other means of return.
In cultures across the world, psychopomps - guides of souls - appear in many forms: ravens, dogs, angels, ancestors. They do not judge; they simply conduct. The ferryman represents the understanding that some transitions cannot be made alone.
