Preservation, the avatars, and the god who enters the world in whatever form is needed.

Vishnu is the great preserver of the Hindu trinity — the god who maintains the cosmic order and who, whenever that order is gravely threatened, descends to earth in a chosen form, an avatar, to set things right. The divine that comes itself, again and again, in whatever form the age requires, he is the sustaining power that will not let the world fall. To carry Vishnu is to carry preservation and the divine descent — the god who maintains the cosmos and comes himself, as avatar after avatar, to restore order whenever it is endangered, the sustaining power that returns in every age to save the world.

Vishnu is the preserver of the Hindu Trimurti — the god who maintains and sustains the cosmic order, dharma, the right functioning of the universe. And Vishnu has a unique and distinctive role: whenever dharma is gravely endangered, whenever evil and chaos threaten to overwhelm the world, Vishnu descends to earth in a particular embodied form — an avatar — to restore the balance and defeat the threat.

The ten primary avatars, the Dashavatara, each address a specific crisis in a specific age: Matsya the fish (who saved humanity from the flood), Kurma the tortoise (who supported the churning of the ocean), Varaha the boar (who raised the earth from the depths), Narasimha the man-lion (who slew a tyrant no man or beast could kill), Vamana the dwarf, Parashurama, Rama, Krishna, the Buddha, and Kalki, the future avatar yet to come who will end the present dark age. Each is Vishnu himself, taking exactly the form needed to meet the crisis of the time. The Hindu Vishnu is the preserver and his avatars — the god who sustains the cosmic order and descends to earth as avatar after avatar (the Dashavatara, from the fish to the future Kalki) to restore dharma whenever evil threatens to overwhelm the world.

The Dashavatara (ten avatars) of Vishnu has been interpreted by several scholars as encoding an evolutionary sequence — fish (first life in water), amphibian (Kurma the tortoise, between water and land), land animal (Varaha the boar), man-lion (the threshold between animal and human), dwarf-human (small human), Parashurama (the warrior, pre-social), Rama (the ideal social man), Krishna (the divine human), Buddha (the enlightened one), Kalki (yet to come) — a narrative of evolution from ocean life to enlightenment that predates Darwin by millennia in its structure. The Kalki avatar — Vishnu's tenth and final descent, yet to occur — will come at the end of the Kali Yuga (the current age of degeneration) riding a white horse with a flaming sword to restore dharma. The Vaishnava tradition (worship of Vishnu) is the largest Hindu denomination by some estimates. The Vishnu Sahasranama (Thousand Names of Vishnu) in the Mahabharata is one of the most recited texts in Hinduism.
