Zeus is the king of the gods — wielder of the thunderbolt, lord of the sky, father of gods and men, who overthrew the Titans to rule Olympus and enforce the order of the cosmos. Supreme in power and authority, he is the archetype of the sovereign and the one who holds, and must answer for, absolute power. To carry Zeus is to carry authority, sovereignty, and the command of thunder — the king of the gods enthroned above all, the thunderbolt of supreme power, and the weight of the responsibility that absolute authority must bear.
Zeus is the supreme ruler of the Greek gods, king of Olympus and lord of the sky. He came to power by overthrowing his father Cronus and the Titans: warned that he would be overthrown by his own child, Cronus swallowed each of his children at birth, but Zeus was hidden away, grew up in secret, and returned to free his swallowed siblings and lead them in the great war against the Titans, casting them down and dividing the cosmos with his brothers — Zeus taking the sky, Poseidon the sea, and Hades the underworld.
As king, Zeus is the enforcer of cosmic order and justice — the upholder of oaths, the protector of guests and suppliants (Zeus Xenios, god of hospitality), and the punisher of those who break the sacred laws, hurling his thunderbolt at the impious and the oath-breakers. Yet he is also famous for his countless love affairs with goddesses and mortal women, fathering many of the gods and heroes — a king whose power is matched by his appetites. Zeus overthrew his father Kronos (who had swallowed his siblings) and divided the cosmos with his brothers: sky for himself, sea for Poseidon, underworld for Hades. His thunderbolt, forged by the Cyclopes, was the ultimate weapon. Despite his power, Zeus was also capricious — his many affairs and shape-shifting seductions fill Greek mythology.
