Aries (The Ram) Tattoo Meaning

The Ram — the first sign of the zodiac: bold, pioneering fire and fearless beginnings.

Aries is the first sign of the zodiac — the Ram, a fire sign ruled by Mars, spanning roughly March 21 to April 19. Its glyph is the ram's curving horns, and its spirit is the spark of beginning: bold, headstrong, pioneering, the courage to go first and charge ahead. To carry Aries is to carry the pioneer's fire — courage, initiative, and the fearless drive to begin.

In Greek myth the ram of Aries is Chrysomallos, the magnificent winged ram with fleece of gold, sent by the gods to rescue the children Phrixus and Helle from being sacrificed. The ram bore them through the sky to safety; though Helle fell into the strait that still bears her name (the Hellespont), Phrixus was carried to Colchis, where the ram was sacrificed in gratitude and its golden fleece hung in a sacred grove — the very fleece that Jason and the Argonauts would later quest to win. In honor of its service, the ram was placed among the stars as the constellation Aries.

As the first sign of the zodiac, ruled by fiery Mars, Aries carries the energy of the ram and the spark of the beginning: boldness, courage, initiative, raw drive, and the fearless will to charge ahead and lead the way. Aries people are the pioneers and initiators, headstrong and brave, the first to act. The Aries ram is the fire of the start — courage, leadership, and the fearless charge into the new.

As an astrology tattoo, Aries is worn as its horn-shaped glyph, the ram, or the constellation, by those born under the sign or drawn to its bold, pioneering fire. It is often combined with birth dates, stars, or the ruling planet Mars. In tattoo symbolism it speaks to courage, leadership, fresh starts, and fearless drive.
